Right behind our house, the side that faces north, is our vegetable garden with several raised beds and 2 larger vegetable beds with tilled soil.
Our kids enjoy running up to the vegetable garden each year during the summer time to check on our tomatoes. However, there’s a lot of grass and lawn that leads up to the garden.
Naturally, I’ve been researching ideas for our own backyard in regards to what kind of pathway could be installed there in order for the kids to have a nice and accessible pathway that leads straight to our vegetable garden without having to walk through grass and our lawn all the time.
Creating a pathway could possibly add a lot of charm, functionality, and structure. And the kids would see if there’s any bees or other bugs on the ground and not step on them.
Let me show you what I’ve researched as possible options for our own backyard pathway, perhaps these backyard pathway ideas will help you in choosing creative options that work for your own backyard and property.

Mulch pathways are affordable, easy to install, and provide a natural look that blends well with gardens while suppressing weeds and improving soil health as it decomposes. However, it seems that they require regular replenishment, and on the other hand it is possible that they can attract pests like insects, and are not ideal for heavy foot traffic.
Natural stone pathways are certainly highly durable, long-lasting, and visually appealing with various textures and colors. They are low-maintenance and eco-friendly but can be expensive to install. Additionally, their uneven surfaces may not be suitable for strollers or wheelchairs, and proper base preparation is necessary to prevent shifting.
Crushed stone pathways are cost-effective, easy to install, and promote good drainage while offering a stable surface when compacted. On the downside, they can be uncomfortable to walk on barefoot, may migrate into surrounding areas without proper edging, and require weed control maintenance.
Wood tile pathways on the other hand provide a warm, natural aesthetics and are comfortable to walk on while being eco-friendly if made from recycled materials. However, they demand regular maintenance like staining or sealing, can weather or rot over time, and may become slippery when wet unless treated.
Personally, I am inclined to choose a pathway that is either made with wood or with natural stone stepping stones. If this project is done and finished I will certainly share and document the results right here on the Kevin vs. the Yard blog.
